Why You Should Exfoliate Your Face

Help! When and how should I exfoliate my facial skin?

We know you have asked that question and we are here to provide you with answers and tips. As you may know, facial skin is different from the rest of our body and varies from person to person. The three classic skin categories are dry, oily and combo but we know that some of us don't quite fall into those categories so it's important to remember that you are unique and will need to do some trial and error to find the right regimen for yourself. 

Why Should I Exfoliate My Skin?

There are many reasons why we should exfoliate our skin and interestingly enough, your skin does it naturally every day. Your skin goes through a process called desquamation - dead skin cells surface and are replaced with new ones. However, if we do not remove dead skin cells they can result in not only dull looking skin but can lead to breakouts, blackheads, blemishes and an uneven complexion. 

When we exfoliate, not only do we remove dead skin cells from the surface to reveal healthier, fresher skin; we shrink pores, remove dirt, brighten our complexion, and enable our skin to absorb more products such as sunscreen and moisturizer. 

How Often Should I Exfoliate My Face?

Health experts recommend exfoliating your skin twice a week. If you live in a hot, humid climate and have oily or combo skin, you may find that you can exfoliate more than twice a week. Due to the hot humid climate of North Carolina, I am currently able to exfoliate my combo facial skin every other day without issue. Keep in mind that I also have sensitive skin. If you live in a drier climate, once or twice a week may be enough. When facial skin is dry and you exfoliate, no matter how gentle the substance, brush, or wash cloth, you may find that it causes more harm than good.

How to know your exfoliating too much? If you see any of the following, take a break from exfoliating for at least a week, use gentle cleansers, and don't forget to moisturize: redness, dry patches, flaky skin, burning sensation

What Should I Use to Exfoliate My Face?

Everyone has different opinions about the best way to exfoliate facial skin. To be honest, any treatment that involves a mechanical tool and/or chemical frightens me. I prefer to control what goes on my skin and the intensity used. Therefore, I use our Cleansing Facial Grains. Our grains are made with oats, lavender buds, rose petals, french green clay, and lavender essential oil. Everything is ground and all of the ingredients are gentle and suitable for your face. You can use a little for exfoliating or a lot for a face mask. It is natural, uncomplicated and will leave your skin soft and smooth. We recommend using the grains in conjunction with our Toners and Facial Serum



How Do I Use Cleansing Facial Grains?

Our facial grains coming in a jar and it is a loose powder. Whether you are in the shower or at the sink, you want to give the jar a shake to loosen up the powder and then remove the lid. Gently tap the jar to sift some of the powder into the palm of your hand. Once you have the desired amount, add small amounts of water at a time until it turns into a thick paste. With one hand, pick up some of the mixture and gently massage into your face. Continue this process until you have massaged your entire face. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. 

To make a facial mask, it is recommended you spoon out the desired amount into a glass bowl, mix with water and apply to your face. Keep the mask on for no more than 3-5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry.

**Since our grains are hand ground please be aware that there may be bits of oats, roses or lavender buds within your jar. If there is a residue in your sink, shower, or tub please know it easily rinses down the drain.**
